Tinnitus Management

A persistent ringing or buzzing that will not stop is common, and it is manageable. We start with a personalized assessment, not a guess.

Chapter 01

What tinnitus actually is.

Tinnitus is a persistent ringing or buzzing in the ears that has no external source. Nobody else in the room hears it. For a lot of people it shows up quietly at first, in a silent room or late at night, and then it starts intruding on ordinary moments: reading, falling asleep, sitting through a conversation.

We're not going to tell you tinnitus has a cure, because it doesn't. What we can tell you, honestly, is that it is manageable, and that most people who work through a real management plan get real, lasting relief. We start every case with a personalized tinnitus assessment. What you hear, when it's worse, whether it comes with hearing loss, is different for every patient, so the plan has to start from your own ears, not a general script.

Masking it with the hearing aids themselves.

For a lot of patients, the most direct relief comes from the hearing aids they're already wearing, or getting fitted for. Several of the models we carry include tinnitus masking features built in: a soft, steady sound that sits underneath the internal ringing and takes the edge off it, so the tinnitus stops being the loudest thing in the room.

That's a fitting decision as much as a device decision. Two patients with similar tinnitus can need different masking settings depending on the pitch and pattern of what they're hearing, which is part of why this gets worked out in person rather than off a spec sheet.

Chapter 03

Sound therapy, and the habits around it.

Alongside the aids, we offer custom sound therapy options built around what actually quiets your particular tinnitus, and we use cognitive behavioral therapy techniques to work on how much attention the ringing is able to demand from you day to day. Those two things work together: one changes what you hear, the other changes how much it bothers you.

We also talk through lifestyle modification guidance, the ordinary daily habits (sleep, stress, caffeine, noise exposure) that can turn tinnitus up or down without anyone touching a device. None of it is a quick trick. It's a set of tools you keep using.

Ongoing support and counseling, not a single appointment.

Tinnitus management here isn't one visit and a device handed over. It's ongoing support and counseling, because what helps in the first month is often not exactly what you need six months in, once you know your own patterns better.

If something isn't working, or your tinnitus changes, you come back in and we adjust the plan. That's the same follow-up philosophy the practice has run on since 1986: the fitting isn't the finish line.

A personalized tinnitus assessment is where we start, before anything is fitted or prescribed. Call (682) 476-8512 to set one up.
